Its 1929, and like most of the world, America is in financial transition. Oklahoma already feels the ill effects. Ominous shadows are cast upon the booming oil fields as a foreboding horizon stretches across the once bountiful farmland beyond.
These are uncertain times, yet the enterprising businessman Erle Halliburton launches Southwest Air Fast Express Air Lines in Tulsa. The new airline grew quickly with service between Dallas and St. Louis, eventually reaching New York and Los Angeles.
In the end, S.A.F.E.Way Air Lines lasted little more than a year as it was purchased by American Airlines in a complicated effort to obtain a desired air mail route.
Halliburton and the investors did well.
Depicted is one of S.A.F.E.Way’s Ford Trimotors, NC9683, (5-AT-39) in an imagined scene approaching Oklahoma City from Tulsa. This aircraft still exists and is on display at the National Air and Space Museum in Washington D.C.
